Our President

Marie Florent-Carre, D.O., M.P.H.

Dr. Florent-Carre, is an associate professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at Nova Southeastern University Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSU-KPCOM) and currently holds the position of Chair of the Department of Rural at NSU-KPCOM. Dr. Florent-Carre has been appointed as the President of the Broward County Medical Association (BCOMA) in January 2025, and has been an active member of the BCOMA for more than 10 years. She currently serves on the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association (FOMA) Board of Trustees as Director at Large and as Chair of the FOMA Public Health Task Force. She has also been appointed to be a board member of the Florida Society of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (FSACOFP).

Dr. Florent-Carre completed a Health Policy Fellowship, certified by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) and Ohio Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. She has been actively involved in research and is currently the principal investigator (PI) of the USDA Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) grant at NSU-KPCOM. She was previously co-investigator of a study on adherence in older adults with multiple chronic conditions, and PI of a grant co-sponsored by Broward Regional Health Planning Council for the Transforming Our Community’s Health (TOUCH) project. 

Dr. Florent-Carre obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition at the University of Florida in 1994. She earned a Master of Public Health degree from Florida International University (FIU) in 1999, and her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at NSU-KPCOM in 2005. Following her
training, she worked as a Ryan White provider at the Broward Community and
Family Health Centers in Broward County, and subsequently obtained her
certification as an HIV specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine.

She continued to provide HIV care at C.L. Brumback Primary Care clinic in Belle Glade, where she served a rural population for several years. She has participated in multiple international outreach trips including Jamaica, Haiti, and Ecuador, where she had an opportunity to provide medical care to various rural settings with limited resources.

Dr. Florent-Carre was a speaker on population health at the 10th Annual Hospital Healthcare Summit. She has been a spokesperson on the Zika virus infection and has appeared on multiple panels attended by healthcare professionals and public officials, including representatives from the CDC. Dr. Florent-Carre appeared on Dateline Health on the spread of the Zika virus and its risks. She also appeared on PBS television show “Viewpoint” as part of a panel discussing Public Health Emergencies. She has had multiple other media interviews, including the Sun- Sentinel, and the Miami Herald, and spoke on the prevention of sexually transmitted infections on “HaiTeen”, a television show hosted by teenagers broadcasted on Island TV, a network available in the U.S. as well as 13 Caribbean countries. She has also been a speaker at the FOMA and FSACOFP conferences.

She has received multiple awards, namely Outstanding Mentor award from
Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade, a Leadership award and a Caring Soul
Award from International Health Initiatives, was selected as one of the top Black educators of South Florida by Legacy magazine, a Community Service award from NSU and more recently, an alumni recognition award by NSU-KPCOM for 20 years of service, named “passion for excellence”. Dr. Florent-Carre continues to be committed to providing quality healthcare to all, is dedicated to the osteopathic profession and the education and training of medical students and residents to become the future leaders of our profession.
