On Tuesday, July 14, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the CY 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) proposed rule, which includes significant proposed changes to physician payment, the Quality Payment Program (QPP), telehealth and other Medicare policies.

Our initial review indicates this proposal contains several provisions that would negatively impact physician practices and Medicare physician payment. Among the most concerning proposals are physician payment reductions, cuts affecting evaluation and management (E/M) services furnished with procedures, including osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), and significant changes to the Quality Payment Program.

Medicare physician payment remains one of the AOA’s highest federal advocacy priorities, and our advocacy efforts are already underway. The AOA is conducting a comprehensive review of the nearly 1,600-page proposed rule and will aggressively pursue every available legislative and regulatory avenue to protect osteopathic physicians and the patients they serve. We will submit detailed comments to CMS before the September deadline, continue working with Congress to prevent additional physician payment cuts and advance long-term Medicare physician payment reform.

To learn more, review our high-level summary of the proposed rule and its key provisions.

Over the coming weeks, we will continue to provide members with additional analysis, advocacy updates and opportunities to engage in the rulemaking process.

Thank you for your continued support of the osteopathic profession.
