When attending a recent medical conference, I realized that the vision for osteopathic medicine in the 21st century remains undefined. As osteopathic physicians (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine [DOs]), our practice philosophy differentiates us from traditional medical doctors (MDs). Osteopathic medicine was supposed to revolve around a holistic approach, considering the patient as a whole rather than focusing merely on their symptoms. However, this distinctive vision has blurred in many cases with adherence to medical practice guidelines and the principles of evidence-based medicine in their approach to patient care; this means that both DOs and MDs employ treatments and intervention strategies that are backed by solid scientific evidence, ensuring the highest standards of medical care for our patients.
